Inquiry into e-mobility Devices

The Queensland Parliament is undertaking a comprehensive inquiry into the safety and use of e-mobility devices across the state. As e-scooters, e-bikes, and other personal mobility devices (PMDs) become more common in our daily lives—helping Queenslanders get to work, school, or public transport—it’s critical we ensure these devices are safe for everyone in our community.

Why This Inquiry Matters

We’ve heard from many locals who are concerned about the behaviours of some people using these devices. Speeding, riding without helmets, erratic steering, and hogging the footpath are common issues raised with me.

Since 2021 and 2024, we’ve seen an increase in injuries involving e-mobility devices, with eight tragic fatalities in the past year alone. Many of these incidents involve illegal or unsafe devices, prompting urgent calls for reform.

The inquiry, conducted by the State Development, Infrastructure and Works Committee, will look into a range of issues including:

  • The benefits of e-mobility for transport and sustainability

  • The rise in crashes, injuries, and community concerns

  • Safety risks associated with lithium batteries and storage

  • Gaps in current regulations and enforcement

  • Challenges around the importation of illegal devices

  • Community education and awareness efforts

  • Perspectives from community groups, disability advocates, road users, health experts, and industry
